Dynamics of political engagement of young people in Cameroon
Young people have always had a special place in African societies with specific roles for harmony and social cohesion long before independence. As independence approached, that is to say during the colonial period, young people in particular who suffered from the mistreatment and injustice inflicted by the colonists such as forced labor in the fields had to start revolt movements throughout Africa and in Cameroon in particular. fight against colonial domination. Cameroonian youth were then in search of new cultural and political identities. We therefore observe movements of demands which are born almost everywhere in Cameroon carried by young people through several organizations: first the trade union movements, in 1944 the first Cameroonian central called Union of Confederated Trade Unions of Cameroon (USCC) was born at the following the union training provided to young Cameroonians by the Frenchman Gaston DONNAT of Marxist communist persuasion; and subsequently the political parties among others The UPC from 1948 with illustrious leaders like Um Nyobe, Ernest Ouandié and many others… in 1954 the Cameroonian democratic youth was formed within the UPC which became an important lever of recruitment of young activists who fight for independence and improvement of the living conditions of Cameroonians. At the end of independence, Cameroonian society was bruised because of the numerous damages caused by the war, the trauma that followed would gradually distance the entire population from the political and associative domain. The imagination that revolves around citizen engagement is pejorative; being interested in politics becomes synonymous with contesting the established order. The more young people deserted the political field, the more we observed a great deterioration in their living conditions. This is how in the 1990s we spontaneously saw a slight interest of the dominant social class in the new movements of demands for Cameroon, from then on we note several entries of young people into the movements, this movement gives birth within the said political parties of youth movements in search of training and experience.
